Manchester LA adopt Honeycomb to encourage individualised learning

Manchester local authority are keen to provide students in Manchester with the means to be motivated and engaged in their learning, whether at school or at home. The local authority has purchased Honeycomb for every Manchester primary school as they see it as a means to:

  • help raise literacy levels through developing activities in Honeycomb which pupils find fun to do - they become engaged with the technology and working with their friends, or even other schools, on their own web pages and don't associate what they are doing with writing for an audience

  • get pupils involved in an online experience in preparation for the implementation of a VLE, which Honeycomb will integrate into

  • force pupils and schools to break away from "class" logins and see why they need individual logins for each pupil

  • to encourage cohesion between clusters of schools

Honeycomb is also being used by the schools on portable Vye mini devices. The device's touch screen capability works well with Honeycomb. As these devices are portable and have internet connectivity this enables schools to offer any time anywhere personalised learning.

A key benefit of Honeycomb was the ability for students to publish their work to others via the internet, but within an e-safe environment so the school can control who the students publish their work to, but the students still get a live audience.

This video highlights how Honeycomb impacted a Year 6 class at St Cuthbert's RC Primary School, where they found that having the ability to publish to an audience by using Honeycomb hugely motivating for these pupils. The class have used Honeycomb in a variety of curriculum contexts e.g. from keeping a diary, to design and technology and geography.

Andrew Wild, School Effectiveness Officer, Children's Services at Manchester LA has overseen Honeycomb's implementation. Should you wish to contact Andrew to find out more about his experience with Honeycomb, just let us know and we'll put you in touch.
